Technology Rules & Guidelines
The following rules and guidelines fall under the South Portland Schools Acceptable Computer Use Policy which should be followed at all times.
Responsibilities
- Use of school computers is a privilege and not a right.
- A student is solely responsible for the laptop s/he is assigned. A student should not share his/her computer with other students.
- Students are financially responsible for lost, stolen or damaged laptop while in their care.
- iBook passwords should be kept confidential.
- Airports must always be left on.
Management
- A student is to store his/her laptop in the designated storage cabinet. During lunch laptops can be stored in the computer cabinet in the cafeteria.
- Laptops must be shut down at the end of each day. Not shutting down your iBook properly may cause overheating and permanent damage
- Laptops should not be stored in student lockers.
- A student should never leave his/her laptop unattended.
- When transporting an iBook from class to class, it must be in its case.
Internet
- Internet use is restricted to academic research and teacher approved web sites. Unless approved by a teacher, music, game, sports, and entertainment sites are prohibited.
- If a student accidentally links to an inappropriate web site, s/he should immediately report it to a teacher.
- No downloading of Internet files without teacher permission.
- Computer “chatting” is prohibited.
- E-mail is not allowed unless set up and supervised by a teacher.
Printing
- A teacher must grant permission to a student PRIOR to printing. The printing of web sites is prohibited.
Recommended Care
- The iBook screen surface can be damaged easily. Do not attempt to clean the screen yourself. Contact your Technology Coordinator for assistance.
Any inappropriate use or neglect of any computer by a student will result in consequences as detailed in the Middle School Disciplinary Code (Level I – Level IV)
- For example, “Electronic Misuse”, a Level I infraction, may include accessing a gaming site or attempting to email an individual.
Special Provisions
- Computer “chatting” is prohibited.
- Restricted students may be allowed to use a school PC under the supervision of a staff member.
